Born in Florence in 1881 to an Italian merchant, Gucci’s first taste of greener pastures came during his time as a lift boy in the Savoy Hotel in London. His interest in designing ended up with him launching the house of Gucci in 1920 as a fine leather goods retailer. He worked tirelessly for his house until his death, earning respect for his choice of materials and quality of design. Gucci passed away in 1953 leaving the management of his brand to his sons.
