The Céline brand

The story of the French luxury fashion house Céline begins in 1945. Céline Vipiana (born 1920) opens a shop for exclusive children’s shoes with her husband in Paris. In the course of the 1950’s, the young label makes a name for itself in the world of women’s fashion. Elegant moccasins form the basis for success of the Céline brand which follows: The label continues to grow and extends its product range: A decade after its foundation, Céline conquers the world of women’s fashion with its first Céline Prêt-à-Porter collection. Leather goods, such as handbags, gloves and belts, as well as a perfume (Vent Fou, no longer available) are released in 1964. The first Céline boutique is opened in the Parisian district of St. Germain des Prés in 1967, and at the start of the 1970’s the first US store is opened; a Céline boutique opens on Rodeo Drive in 1976. International expansion begins with entry into the Japanese market.

First and foremost, Céline clothes are distinguished by their clean, modern style, which is completely fit for everyday wear. The sporty look in the premium segment such as swinging skirts, figure-hugging shirts and soft knitwear are uncomplicated and fit the Céline wearer well. Céline Vipiana calls her collections “Couture Sportswear”. The purist design runs through the Céline collections. With her minimalistic designs for the Céline Capsule collection, Phoebe Philo completes the core components of the brand’s wardrobe and celebrates great success: The “Five Perfect Trousers” offer five different sets of Céline trousers for five different occasions: Whether high-waisted with a wide flare, narrow-cut with creases or androgynous slim-fit - the five pairs of trousers offer perfect styling for every event and make it easy for the Céline wearer to feel well-dressed. The accessoires have an unmistakable urban look.

Things to know about Céline

The company has been personally lead by Céline Vipiana for nearly 40 years. Phoebe Philo took over creative direction of Céline in 2008, and left Chloé to do so. The luxury label Céline has belonged to LVMH (Louis Vuitton - Moët Hennessy) since 1993. Céline has secured a leading position amongst the world’s top fashion labels. Céline bags set hearts racing, be it in Milan or New York - people even queued around the block for the "Cuir de Sulky” bags.
